WrestleMania Recap

A quick rundown of the matches last night at WrestleMania.

  1. The the pre-show dark match, Epico & Primo defeated The Usos and Justin Gabriel & Tyson Kidd to retain the WWE Tag Team Championships. Pretty short match overall, but allowed the WWE to test live streaming pre-PPV matches.
  2. Sheamus defeated Daniel Bryan to become the new World Heavyweight Champion. Squash match. One brogue kick and it was over.
  3. Kane defeated Randy Orton with a chokeslam from the top rope. Good match over. Little slow in spots, but overall a good match.
  4. The Big Show defeated Cody Rhodes to become the new Intercontinental Champion with a knockout punch. This not only gave Big Show a nice WrestleMania moment, but he became a triple crown champion with his first IC title win.
  5. Kelly Kelly & Maria Menounos defeated Beth Phoenix & Eve Torres.
  6. Undertaker defeated Triple H inside Hell in a Cell to run his WrestleMania record to 20-0. Great match. Great storytelling. Shawn Michaels got involved at various points to ‘think’ about stopping the match as well as stop both HHH and Undertaker from using weapons too much in the match. After the match, Taker and Michaels carried HHH to the back. Great moment.
  7. Team Johnny defeated Team Teddy in a match that I would say was better than I expected. Dolph Ziggler took a couple of amazing bumps, including doing a full flip from a springboard. The match ended with Zack Ryder getting the Miz in the corner, lined up for the Broski boot, when Eve came into the ring. She distracted both the ref and Ryder long enough for Miz to get up and deliver the Skullcrushing finale on Ryder and pick up the win. After the match, Eve kicked Ryder in his ‘little broski’ and stormed away from the ring.
  8. CM Punk defeated Chris Jericho to retain the WWE Championship. Great match. Featured one of the best go-home wrestling segments I have ever seen.
  9. The Rock defeated John Cena. Very good match. Slow start, great build, good action. Both men kicked out of the others finishers, and both men endured a long submission hold from the other. Rock picked up the win when Cena went for the People’s Elbow and Rock jumped up from the mat and Rock Bottomed him.

Overall, a very good slow. The low points where definitely the Sheamus/Bryan match, which everyone wanted to be longer and let us see a great match, and the divas match, which was about as expected.

WrestleMania – The Rock’s win proves his ego is out of control

In the long history of ‘passing the torch’ matches, no one has had the ridiculous ego to not put the new guy over.

Hogan even put the Rock over 10 years ago. But could Dwayne do the same? No. He just couldn’t bring himself to job to John Cena.

And Cena, being the company man – scratch that, the man – that he is, did the job. Clean I might add. Its been a very, very long time since John Cena lost a match completely clean. But he did it last night to The Rock.

The question is: Why?

What purpose did Rock winning serve?

  • To stroke his ego? Accomplished.
  • To get the live crowd to go bonkers? Accomplished.
  • To give old Rock fans a moment? Accomplished.
  • To push storylines ahead? We have to wait and see.
  • To prove Cena is the face of the WWE? Failed.
  • To give the current fans – the ones that aren’t just tuning in to see The Rock – a moment? Failed.
No one wanted to see interference. No one wanted to see a crappy finish. We got neither of those. That was good. But the WWE had two people in this match. One they know is only doing one more appearance for a while, and that is tonight on Raw. The other will be there every single night for the foreseeable future. Why did the one that was leaving get the win?
This is equivalent of letting Bret beat Shawn in Montreal. Bret wanted the win there, because it was Canada, and said he would vacate the belt on Raw the next night. But Vince didn’t want to see someone that was leaving win on his last Pay Per View. So he screwed Bret. At least we know Vince has changed his mind on such things in the meantime.
Maybe the WWE will surprise me and go somewhere with Cena from this. But I doubt it. I think Vince’s love for Rock just allowed him to let a – lets face it – non-wrestler go over his biggest star in the biggest event of the year. And for no other reason than the huge pop from the crowd.
Rock will come out tonight, say the same exact things he’s said for a year, and be gone. He’ll going away to film movies. Good riddance.

WWE Championship Match: CM Punk vs Chris Jericho

This is the match a lot of wrestling fans are really waiting for. Ever since Jericho starting attacking Punk on Twitter months before the vignettes for his return even started, people started dreaming about a CM Punk vs Chris Jericho feud. I feel a lot of potential has been lost, since it is only the 3rd most important match on the card to the WWE right now, but that doesn’t mean this has to end at WrestleMania. Since the Rock/Cena and HHH/UT matches won’t have a return match at Extreme Rules, this match definitely will. That means a non-clean ending one way or another.

Jericho has said his whole reason for coming back was to take on Punk. This is great for this storyline, but it limits what else Jericho can do. He is expect to be gone by the summer, due to a tour with Fozzy. But would he really come back for such a short stint and not claim ‘his’ WWE title during the process?

The feud has picked up in recent weeks with Jericho attacking Punk’s family – and with Punk’s great acting. Maybe he should get a WWE movie role, after all. And with Punk ‘snapping’ and injuring Christian on Raw, the WWE tried to show Jericho was having an effect on Punk.

I expect a great match here. Punk vs Jericho, two of the best wrestlers in the world – and not only as a catchphrase – on the biggest stage of them all. They will get plenty of time to show off what they can do. They will be able to work the crowd, take time in the match, and properly tell a story in the ring. I expect nothing short of a five star performance from both men.

But when its all said and done, what will happen?

Jericho will win, that is what is going to happen. I’m thinking old school foot on the ropes while Jericho pins Punk.

Winner and NEW WWE Champion: Chris Jericho

#WrestleMania 28 Predictions: Team Teddy vs Team Johnny

Team Teddy (Santino, Kofi Kingston, R-Truth, Zack Ryder, The Great Khali & Booker T)
vs
Team Johnny (David Otunga, Dolph Ziggler, The Miz, Jack Swagger, Mark Henry & Drew McIntyre)

From the introduction of John Laurinitis to the every day WWE viewer way back at Money in the Bank when he took a bump that Vince McMahon would have taken himself years ago, his character has brought massive heat. His deep voice, the way he talks, fans just hate it. He has grown as a character, yes, and is a lot more sure of himself on the microphone now, but is still painful to watch sometimes. The ‘Elimination Pay Per View’ and announcing The Miz as joining Team Teddy before quickly correcting himself are two of the most glaring. I mean, how do you forget your own name?

Teddy Long, on the other hand, has been running Smackdown, with a short ECW stint in the middle, since 2004. His character is tired, stale, and quite frankly, boring. So much so that there is this flow chart of his decisions:

This match has a possibility of being anywhere on the map. With 12 men in the ring, and only one fall to a finish, it could be very short, or go pretty long. Couple of things that we will see for sure:

  1. Ziggler will be given time to show off
  2. Everyone will get their finishers off in a back to back series as we’ve seen in multi man tags a lot lately
  3. It will devolve into an all out brawl at least once.

The possibilities for a heel GM are just a lot higher than a face GM. People want to see the face win over long (no pun intended) odds and strike back against the GM. Plus, we are all tired of tag team matches. Not that the booking will change with a different Smackdown GM, but the storylines will.

I think the move to one GM is part of a long term WWE plan to finally reunite the brands. They are just taking their time and doing it one slow step at a time. The first was reintegrating the rosters completely with the ‘RAW SuperShows’. This is the next. Next month will be what I figure the final ‘Draft’. Will it lead to less titles? Possibly. I could see the US title going away, but leaving both the WHC and WWE titles.

As for the outcome, I see two possible finishes. One is Zack Ryder taking the victory over someone, to give him a WrestleMania moment as a reward for all his work over the past year. The other is some sort of shenanigans that cause Team Teddy to lose. I know it won’t be a clean Laurinitis win, but it will be a win for them, I believe. I don’t know if it will be a heel turn by someone on Team Teddy, or outside interference, or just a referee outright missing something. But it will be a Team Johnny win.

Winner: Team Johnny

The Go-Home #Raw Before #WrestleMania – A Preview

Before Raw kicks off tonight, we have an hour preview of the Cena vs Rock feud. Everyone that has seen it has said it is very good, and contains a lot of unseen, behind the scenes footage. I’ll be watching.

Once we get onto the show, expect nearly every match to be given at least some time to build. But the main events are the ones that are going to get a lot of time.

Expect the show to close with Cena and Rock. Middle of the show will be HHH vs Taker, and the show will open with Team Teddy vs Team Johnny. Filling in the rest of the segments will be the other matches. I expect Daniel Bryan vs CM Punk and Sheamus vs Chris Jericho matches, as usual.

The only match that I see with little build tonight is the ‘celebrity’ match of Kelly Kelly & Maria Menounos vs Eve and Beth Phoenix, mostly because Menounos appearantly suffered a broken rib during Dancing with the Stars training.

We’re 1 hour away from the Rock vs Cena special. Bring it on WWE, we’re waiting.

Evan Bourne’s broken foot will (most likely) end his WWE tenure

Evan Bourne posted on his twitter yesterday that he had broken his foot.

From the two pictures he posted, it looks very serious.

Coming on the tail end of his second suspension for a violation of the wellness policy, this couldn’t be worse for him.

The WWE had stuck by him thus far, despite him losing basically the entire last four months due to the suspensions.

However, they won’t stick by him through rehabbing the foot, which could take many, many more months.

He has always been viewed as an underachiever, and his recent suspensions not only damaged him, but also Kofi Kingston, and came at a time when their tag team, Air Boom, was just starting to look like a legitimate team, including rolling out a team T-Shirt on the very weekend he got suspended.

The WWE has no guarantee that Bourne will stay clean after or during his recovery and rehab, so they won’t bother taking the chance. When they do their upcoming spring cleaning, Bourne will be among the names to go.

As always, follow @wrestlingfeeds on twitter.

What will the #WrestleMania match order be?

We’re 13 days out from WrestleMania 28. Only four shows left, two of Raw and two of Smackdown.

So with time running short, one of the logical things to discuss is the order in which the matches are going to be contested.

Here is a list of the current matches – with the possibility that one could be added in the next 13 days.

  • John Cena vs The Rock
  • Randy Orton vs Kane
  • Team Teddy vs Team Johnny
  • The Undertaker vs Triple H in Hell in a Cell with special guest referee Shawn Michaels
  • WWE Champion CM Punk vs Chris Jericho
  • World Heavyweight Champion Daniel Bryan vs Sheamus
  • Intercontinental Champion Cody Rhodes vs The Big Show
  • Kelly Kelly & Maria Menounos vs Divas Champion Beth Phoenix & Eve

The first thing to keep in mind is that WWE likes breaking the big matches up, somewhat. Last year the show opened with Edge vs Alberto Del Rio for the World Heavyweight Championship. The same thing could happen this year, with Daniel Bryan vs Sheamus, and I think that will be how WWE will go. Trying to open the show with a bang.

The second thing to remember is that the WWE learned its lesson when Rock vs Hogan did not close WrestleMania 18. Rock vs Cena will definitely close WrestleMania 28.

They definitely will not put Hell in a Cell right back to back with Rock vs Cena. They will give the crowd a chance to calm down between the matches. So thats the perfect spot for the ‘celebrity’ match of Kelly Kelly & Maria Menounos vs Divas Champion Beth Phoenix & Eve.

I also don’t think they will lead into Hell in a Cell with the WWE Championship match, so they will put something between the two as well. Seems like a good spot for Team Teddy vs Team Johnny.

Before the WWE Championship match, I see the Randy Orton vs Kane match.

That leaves the second match of the show, which is Cody Rhodes vs Big Show for the Intercontinental Championship.

So here’s our projected match order:

  1. World Heavyweight Champion Daniel Bryan vs Sheamus
  2. Intercontinental Champion Cody Rhodes vs The Big Show
  3. Randy Orton vs Kane
  4. WWE Champion CM Punk vs Chris Jericho
  5. Team Teddy vs Team Johnny
  6. The Undertaker vs Triple H in Hell in a Cell with special guest referee Shawn Michaels
  7. Kelly Kelly & Maria Menounos vs Divas Champion Beth Phoenix & Eve
  8. John Cena vs The Rock
We will see in 13 nights how accurate this is. Stay tuned for my predictions on each match.

Does @shawnmichaels add to or take away from HHH-UT at #WrestleMania?

The Heartbreak Kid. The Showstopper. Mr. WrestleMania. Among countless other nicknames, those are the best known for Shawn Michaels.

With him serving as guest referee in the HHH vs Undertaker Hell in a Cell Match at WrestleMania 28, its hard to imagine him not being involved very heavily in what happens in the match.

Despite the bluster, Michaels has the most losses in the history of WrestleMania, with 11 – against 6 wins. That fact is something you never see bandied about by WWE, even as they push The Big Show’s WrestleMania ‘struggles’. Two of those losses came against the Undertaker, and HHH also has those two losses against the Deadman.

Could these two former DX members band together and make sure HHH doesn’t go 0-3? No.

Even if they do act as a team, WWE is smart enough to not end the streak like that. Michaels may get involved on HHH’s behalf, or attack both men, but if UT is going to lose at WrestleMania, it has to be clean. Throwing ‘The Streak’ away with a muddled finish would be wasting everything its been built up to be to this point, probably the most important record in the WWE. And to have it go to HHH, a part time wrestler at best, doesn’t make sense.

Why put HHH over UT? It doesn’t help build anyone up for the future. And if ‘The Streak’ is going to end before the Undertaker retires for good (which there has been no talk of him doing after this WrestleMania), then it should end to someone it can help. HHH isn’t going to be a full time wrestler anymore. He probably will never hold another title for any length of time. A win in this match means nothing as far as his character’s stature is concerned.

If anyone in the current WWE was going to take ‘The Streak’, it has to be someone young, big, and able to get over with the fans. There is only one person that comes to mind that can fill that spot right now, and he has a year to get himself up to where he could possibly be that good.  He would need a gimmick change, and some time fighting upper-card opponents, but neither of those should be a problem.

That man is the Funkasaurus, Brodus Clay.
